Firm Sues University of Miami on Behalf of Comatose Patient
The firm recently filed a lawsuit against the University of Miami on behalf of a victim of alleged negligence. According to the suit, a lack of post-operative care and observation left Pablo Portieles incapacitated and comatose.
Last February, Portieles was treated for a gunshot wound by University of Miami physicians at Jackson Memorial Hospital. After initial treatment, he was placed in a post-operative care unit where his deteriorating condition, including an injured spleen, went unrecognized and untreated by physicians. Portieles subsequently went into cardio-pulmonary arrest causing permanent brain damage. He is currently in a minimally conscious state and is residing at a rehabilitative facility where he remains bedridden and unable to speak, walk, eat or perform any daily living activities.

The scholarship, recently re-named the Tomas J. Gamba Scholarship in honor of partner Tomas F. Gamba's father, looks for students who have overcome obstacles such as socioeconomic or educational disadvantages and/or who are the first generation in their family to attend college.
This year, the Tomas F. Gamba Scholarship was presented to Florida International University law student Jesika Diaz at the Miami-Dade Florida Association for Women Lawyers Chapter's Annual Judicial Reception. Congratulations!
