One of the most significant and memorable cases in the recent history of South Florida's civil courts, the case of Banco Espirito Santo Intl. Ltd. v. BDO Seidman LLP concluded recently with a historic $521 million verdict for the Portugal-based bank. I helped try the case with lead counsel Steven Thomas of the internationally renowned law firm Sullivan & Cromwell in Los Angeles and co-counsel Gonzalo R. Dorta, a solo practitioner based in Coral Gables.

On October 30, 2007, Circuit Judge John H. Adams Sr. of Orlando declared the medical malpractice caps on damages unconstitutional in the case of Cavanaugh v. Cardiology Associates of Orlando , P.A., et al.

Medical liability claims filed against healthcare providers continue to fall because of more patient-safety programs created by hospitals, according to a national study by AON Corporation in conjunction with the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management. Even though many physicians and care providers continue to complain about the number of medical-malpractice lawsuits filed against them and push for additional reforms, the frequency and severity of hospital claims are at new lows. The annual report represents the most comprehensive look at liability claims in the U.S. healthcare industry.

For the past several years, Gamba & Lombana has adopted Ms. Shirley Henry's kindergarten class at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Overtown. The firm's attorneys have created Easter and holiday baskets for the children and attended their special shows to demonstrate our support.

The Miami-Dade Florida Association for Women Lawyers Chapter annually awards two deserving law students with the Gamba & Lombana Scholarship.
